{"id":2707,"date":"2026-08-22T15:02:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T19:02:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.gracewalk.net\/?page_id=2707"},"modified":"2026-08-22T15:06:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T19:06:43","slug":"mark-11","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.gracewalk.net\/?page_id=2707","title":{"rendered":"Mark 11"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark 11:1-14 (NASB) 1 As they *approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, He *sent two of His disciples, 2 and said to them, \u201cGo into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone says to you, \u2018Why are you doing this?\u2019 you say, \u2018The Lord has need of it\u2019; and immediately he will send it back here.\u201d 4 They went away and found a colt tied at the door, outside in the street; and they untied it. 5 Some of the bystanders were saying to them, \u201cWhat are you doing, untying the colt?\u201d 6 They spoke to them just as Jesus had told them, and they gave them permission. 7 They brought the colt to Jesus and put their coats on it; and He sat on it. 8 And many spread their coats in the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields. 9 Those who went in front and those who followed were shouting:<br>\u201cHosanna!<br>BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD;<br>10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David;<br>Hosanna in the highest!\u201d<br>11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple; and after looking around at everything, He left for Bethany with the twelve, since it was already late.<br>12 On the next day, when they had left Bethany, He became hungry. 13 Seeing at a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if perhaps He would find anything on it; and when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 He said to it, \u201cMay no one ever eat fruit from you again!\u201d And His disciples were listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What do you see about Jesus in verses 1-3?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do verses 3-6 reveal about Jesus?  Has Jesus done something similar in your life by preparing you for what will happen?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See 1 Maccabees 13:50-51 &#8211; what did it symbolize for the people to wave palm fronds?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See 2Kings 9:11-13 &#8211; what did it mean to lay coats on the ground before Jesus?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What were the people saying as they were carrying out these customs?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do you gather from Jesus and the fig tree (see also Matthew 21:18-22)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark 11:15-26 (NASB) 15 Then they *came to Jerusalem. And He entered the temple and began to drive out those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves; 16 and He would not permit anyone to carry merchandise through the temple. 17 And He began to teach and say to them, \u201cIs it not written, \u2018MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER FOR ALL THE NATIONS\u2019? But you have made it a ROBBERS\u2019 DEN.\u201d 18 The chief priests and the scribes heard this, and began seeking how to destroy Him; for they were afraid of Him, for the whole crowd was astonished at His teaching.<br>19 When evening came, they would go out of the city.<br>20 As they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. 21 Being reminded, Peter *said to Him, \u201cRabbi, look, the fig tree which You cursed has withered.\u201d 22 And Jesus *answered saying to them, \u201cHave faith in God. 23 Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, \u2018Be taken up and cast into the sea,\u2019 and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him. 24 Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you. 25 Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions. 26 [ But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your transgressions.\u201d]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who is involved in the confrontation as Jesus entered the temple?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What upset Jesus and why?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What was the response of the priests and scribes and why?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is Jesus teaching about faith and forgiveness in verses 22-26?  How can we apply this to our own lives?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark 11:27-33 (NASB) 27 They *came again to Jerusalem. And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders *came to Him, 28 and began saying to Him, \u201cBy what authority are You doing these things, or who gave You this authority to do these things?\u201d 29 And Jesus said to them, \u201cI will ask you one question, and you answer Me, and then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was the baptism of John from heaven, or from men? Answer Me.\u201d 31 They began reasoning among themselves, saying, \u201cIf we say, \u2018From heaven,\u2019 He will say, \u2018Then why did you not believe him?\u2019 32 But shall we say, \u2018From men\u2019?\u201d\u2014they were afraid of the people, for everyone considered John to have been a real prophet. 33 Answering Jesus, they *said, \u201cWe do not know.\u201d And Jesus *said to them, \u201cNor will I tell you by what authority I do these things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What conflict arises in these passages and with whom?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How does Jesus answer?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What does the conclusion of this conflict teach you about Jesus and the chief priests and scribes?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark 12:1-12 (NASB) 1 And He began to speak to them in parables: \u201cA man PLANTED A VINEYARD AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT, AND DUG A VAT UNDER THE WINE PRESS AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey. 2 At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, in order to receive some of the produce of the vineyard from the vine-growers. 3 They took him, and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Again he sent them another slave, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully. 5 And he sent another, and that one they killed; and so with many others, beating some and killing others. 6 He had one more to send, a beloved son; he sent him last of all to them, saying, \u2018They will respect my son.\u2019 7 But those vine-growers said to one another, \u2018This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!\u2019 8 They took him, and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. 9 What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vine-growers, and will give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not even read this Scripture:<br>\u2018THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED,<br>THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone;<br>11 THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD,<br>AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES\u2019?\u201d<br>12 And they were seeking to seize Him, and yet they feared the people, for they understood that He spoke the parable against them. And so they left Him and went away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you see a parallel between this parable and Isaiah 5:1-7? What is different in the two parables?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See Psalm 118:22-23 and Isaiah 28:16 for the rejected stone.  What do you see in Jesus&#8217; reference to these passages?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How did this leave the priests and scribes?  Why didn&#8217;t they act?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark 12:13-40 (NASB) 13 Then they *sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Him in order to trap Him in a statement. 14 They *came and *said to Him, \u201cTeacher, we know that You are truthful and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay a poll-tax to Caesar, or not? 15 Shall we pay or shall we not pay?\u201d But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, \u201cWhy are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to look at.\u201d 16 They brought one. And He *said to them, \u201cWhose likeness and inscription is this?\u201d And they said to Him, \u201cCaesar\u2019s.\u201d 17 And Jesus said to them, \u201cRender to Caesar the things that are Caesar\u2019s, and to God the things that are God\u2019s.\u201d And they were amazed at Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who is involved and what is the confrontation in this passage?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jews didn&#8217;t like the Roman tribute tax and some refused to pay in rebellion to acknowledging Roman rule.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Mark 12:18-27 Some Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) *came to Jesus, and began questioning Him, saying, 19 \u201cTeacher, Moses wrote for us that IF A MAN\u2019S BROTHER DIES and leaves behind a wife AND LEAVES NO CHILD, HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER. 20 There were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and died leaving no children. 21 The second one married her, and died leaving behind no children; and the third likewise; 22 and so all seven left no children. Last of all the woman died also. 23 In the resurrection, when they rise again, which one\u2019s wife will she be? For all seven had married her.\u201d 24 Jesus said to them, \u201cIs this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 26 But regarding the fact that the dead rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him, saying, \u2018I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB\u2019? 27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; you are greatly mistaken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Mark 12:28-38 One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, \u201cWhat commandment is the foremost of all?\u201d 29 Jesus answered, \u201cThe foremost is, \u2018HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD; 30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.\u2019 31 The second is this, \u2018YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.\u2019 There is no other commandment greater than these.\u201d 32 The scribe said to Him, \u201cRight, Teacher; You have truly stated that HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE BESIDES HIM; 33 AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE\u2019S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.\u201d 34 When Jesus saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, \u201cYou are not far from the kingdom of God.\u201d After that, no one would venture to ask Him any more questions.<br>35 And Jesus began to say, as He taught in the temple, \u201cHow is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself said in the Holy Spirit,<br>\u2018THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,<br>\u201cSIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,<br>UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET.\u201d\u2019<br>37 David himself calls Him \u2018Lord\u2019; so in what sense is He his son?\u201d And the large crowd enjoyed listening to Him.  38 In His teaching He was saying: \u201cBeware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like respectful greetings in the market places, 39 and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 40 who devour widows\u2019 houses, and for appearance\u2019s sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Another scribe asks Jesus a new question?  How was this answer received and Jesus response? (1 Samuel 15:22 ). How do you think the scribe felt?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What did Jesus ask next?  What does this mean?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is Jesus warning for the people about the scribes?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark 12:41-44 (NASB) 41 And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums. 42 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent. 43 Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, \u201cTruly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; 44 for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What lesson was Jesus teaching about giving?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">References<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1 Maccabees 13:50-51: <sup>50&nbsp;<\/sup>Then they cried to Simon to make peace with them, and he did so. Why did this mad fellow come to you?\u201d And he said to them, \u201cYou know very well the man and his talk.\u201d 12 They said, \u201cIt is a lie, tell us now.\u201d And he said, \u201cThus and thus he said to me, \u2018Thus says the LORD, \u201cI have anointed you king over Israel.\u201d\u2019\u201d 13 Then they hurried and each man took his garment and placed it under him on the bare steps, and blew the trumpet, saying, \u201cJehu is king!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthew 21:18-22 (NASB) 18 Now in the morning, when He was returning to the city, He became hungry. 19 Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it except leaves only; and He *said to it, \u201cNo longer shall there ever be any fruit from you.\u201d And at once the fig tree withered.<br>20 Seeing this, the disciples were amazed and asked, \u201cHow did the fig tree wither all at once?\u201d 21 And Jesus answered and said to them, \u201cTruly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, \u2018Be taken up and cast into the sea,\u2019 it will happen. 22 And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psalms 80:8-16 (NASB) 8 You removed a vine from Egypt;<br>You drove out the nations and planted it.<br>9 You cleared the ground before it,<br>And it took deep root and filled the land.<br>10 The mountains were covered with its shadow,<br>And the cedars of God with its boughs.<br>11 It was sending out its branches to the sea<br>And its shoots to the River.<br>12 Why have You broken down its hedges,<br>So that all who pass that way pick its fruit?<br>13 A boar from the forest eats it away<br>And whatever moves in the field feeds on it.<br>14 O God of hosts, turn again now, we beseech You;<br>Look down from heaven and see, and take care of this vine,<br>15 Even the shoot which Your right hand has planted,<br>And on the son whom You have strengthened for Yourself.<br>16 It is burned with fire, it is cut down;<br>They perish at the rebuke of Your countenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isaiah 5:1-7 (NASB) 1 Let me sing now for my well-beloved<br>A song of my beloved concerning His vineyard.<br>My well-beloved had a vineyard on a fertile hill.<br>2 He dug it all around, removed its stones,<br>And planted it with the choicest vine.<br>And He built a tower in the middle of it<br>And also hewed out a wine vat in it;<br>Then He expected it to produce good grapes,<br>But it produced only worthless ones.<br>3 \u201cAnd now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah,<br>Judge between Me and My vineyard.<br>4 \u201cWhat more was there to do for My vineyard that I have not done in it?<br>Why, when I expected it to produce good grapes did it produce worthless ones?<br>5 \u201cSo now let Me tell you what I am going to do to My vineyard:<br>I will remove its hedge and it will be consumed;<br>I will break down its wall and it will become trampled ground.<br>6 \u201cI will lay it waste;<br>It will not be pruned or hoed,<br>But briars and thorns will come up.<br>I will also charge the clouds to rain no rain on it.\u201d<br>7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel<br>And the men of Judah His delightful plant.<br>Thus He looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed;<br>For righteousness, but behold, a cry of distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psalms 118:22-23 (NASB) The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner stone. 23 This is the LORD\u2019S doing;
