Matthew 7

Verses 1-5:

  • What does the word judge mean to you?
  • What is Jesus command regarding judging?
  • On what grounds does Jesus explain that we should not judge?
  • What does Jesus mean *”The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you”* in Verse 2?
  • Discuss the comparison between the beam and the splinter:
  • Who in the story has the beam and who the splinter?
  • Why do you think Jesus told the story that way?
  • Does the comparison indicate lesser and greater evils? If so, what is it saying about each?

Verses 6:

  • What does Jesus mean in this verse?
  • Does this verse have any relationship to verses 1-5 and the rest of this chapter?
  • How does this effect the way you worship and witness?

Verses 7-11:

  • Ask, seek, knock. Receive, find, open. Discuss the relationship between these?
  • What must come first?
  • To whom is the gift of receiving, seeking and opening given?
  • How does Jesus explain the gifts that God has for us?

Verses 12-14:

  • What is the law and the prophets?
  • What does it mean “This is the law and the prophets?”
  • What word of caution does Jesus give relating to the easy path?

Verses 15-20

  • What does Jesus call false prophets? What does that tell you about the effect of false prophets?
  • What is the sure sign of a false prophet?
  • What does Jesus mean by good and bad fruit and good and bad trees?
  • What will be the consequences of bad trees?

Verses 21-23:

  • What is the key to entering the kindgom of heaven?
  • What value will be for prophets, and those who do good in Jesus name but who don’t do the will of God?
  • Isn’t doing good and fortelling and healing the will of God?

Verses 24-29

  • What do we have to do in order to benefit from Jesus words?
  • Compare the effects of listening to his words and acting or not acting on them?
  • What astonished the crowds after Jesus finished teaching?
  • Can you imaging what that must have been like? How would he have to teach to have that kind of effect on you?
