Proverbs 5

Verses 1-6

  • How does Solomon start this chapter?
  • How does Solomon describe the desception of the strange woman? How can you know her?
  • What difference is there between the lips of the woman and what Solomon instructs to be on the lips of his son?
  • What would you imagine temptation would say to you that would seem like honey and smoother than oil?
  • What is your first reaction to these things?
  • How does Solomon describe what is really behind that smooth oil and honey?
  • What do you think Solomon means by verse 6? That you can’t understand the ways of temptation, or that you should not know the ways of temptation?
  • Is there any way that you can apply this lesson to situations in your life right now?

Verses 7-14

  • Can you give examples of keeping far away and not even coming near temptation’s door?
  • What are the consequences of being close to temptation? How will it affect you, your life, your relationships?
  • What is the final consequence of following temptation?
  • Can you imagine this? Seeing truth when it is too late?

Verse 15-19

  • What specific temptation is Solomon describing here?
  • What are the benefits of fidelity?

Verses 20-23

  • Look at the following verses that support Solomon’s guidance: II Chron. 16:9; Job 31:4; 34:21; Prov. 15:3; Jer. 16:17;Hos. 7:2; Heb. 4:13.
  • Do you agree that sin is a snare?
  • Why are men so tempted by “loose” women? What do you think?
  • What keeps us from being ensnared?
  • Which of the 10 commandments do you think is being taught here?
