Isaiah 43

Isa 43:1-7 NASB But now, thus says the LORD, your Creator, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine! (2) “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you. (3) “For I am the LORD your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I have given Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in your place. (4) “Since you are precious in My sight, Since you are honored and I love you, I will giveother men in your place and other peoples in exchange for your life. (5) “Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, And gather you from the west. (6) “I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ And to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring My sons from afar And My daughters from the ends of the earth, (7) Everyone who is called by My name, And whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made.”

  • Do you think that verse 2 is only figurative illustration of God\’s protection? Why or Why not? (Exo 14:29, Dan 3:24-27) What does this tell you about God’s promises?
  • What does God mean in verse 4? How much importance does God place on His people?
  • Verse 7 – who is blessed with God’s wonderful love? How does this apply to we Christians?

Isa 43:8-21 NASB Bring out the people who are blind, even though they have eyes, And the deaf, even though they have ears. (9) All the nations have gathered together So that the peoples may be assembled. Who among them can declare this And proclaim to us the former things? Let them present their witnesses that they may be justified, Or let them hear and say, “It is true.” (10) “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “And My servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know and believe Me And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, And there will be none after Me. (11) “I, even I, am the LORD, And there is no savior besides Me. (12) “It is I who have declared and saved and proclaimed, And there was no strange god among you; So you are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “And I am God. (13) “Even from eternity I am He, And there is none who can deliver out of My hand; I act and who can reverse it?” (14) Thus says the LORD your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, “For your sake I have sent to Babylon, And will bring them all down as fugitives, Even the Chaldeans, into the ships in which they rejoice. (15) “I am the LORD, your Holy One, The Creator of Israel, your King.” (16) Thus says the LORD, Who makes a way through the sea And a path through the mighty waters, (17) Who brings forth the chariot and the horse, The army and the mighty man (They will lie down together and not rise again; They have been quenched and extinguished like a wick): (18) “Do not call to mind the former things, Or ponder things of the past. (19) “Behold, I will do something new, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert. (20) “The beasts of the field will glorify Me, The jackals and the ostriches, Because I have given waters in the wilderness And rivers in the desert, To give drink to My chosen people. (21) “The people whom I formed for Myself Will declare My praise.

  • Verses 8-13: God proclaiming who He is based on what He has already done
    • Who does God say He is?
    • What does God say about His chosen ones?
    • Why does God want His chosen to know Him?
  • Verse 18-21: What does God tell His people to look for? When do you think this will happen and why?
  • What does this reveal about God\’s character?

Isa 43:22-28 NASB \”Yet you have not called on Me, O Jacob; But you have become weary of Me, O Israel. (23) \”You have not brought to Me the sheep of your burnt offerings, Nor have you honored Me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with offerings, Nor wearied you with incense. (24) \”You have bought Me not sweet cane with money, Nor have you filled Me with the fat of your sacrifices; Rather you have burdened Me with your sins, You have wearied Me with your iniquities. (25) \”I, even I, am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own sake, And I will not remember your sins. (26) \”Put Me in remembrance, let us argue our case together; State your cause, that you may be proved right. (27) \”Your first forefather sinned, And your spokesmen have transgressed against Me. (28) \”So I will pollute the princes of the sanctuary, And I will consign Jacob to the ban and Israel to revilement.

Isa 44:1-5 NASB “But now listen, O Jacob, My servant, And Israel, whom I have chosen: (2) Thus says the LORD who made you And formed you from the womb, who will help you, ‘Do not fear, O Jacob My servant; And you Jeshurun whom I have chosen. (3) ‘For I will pour out water on the thirsty land And streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring And My blessing on your descendants; (4) And they will spring up among the grass Like poplars by streams of water.’ (5) “This one will say, ‘I am the LORD’S’; And that one will call on the name of Jacob; And another will write on his hand, ‘Belonging to the LORD,’ And will name Israel’s name with honor.

  • What has changed?
  • Jeshurun A poetical name for the people of Israel, used in token of affection, meaning, “the dear upright people” (Deu_32:15; Deu_33:5, Deu_33:26; Isa_44:2).
  • What is upright about Israel? What are they doing in verses 4 and 5? What does this demonstrate about their attitudes toward God?
  • Has God changed? (See Exo 19:5-6, Deu 7:6-8)
  • How does this apply to we Christians?

Dan 3:24-27 NASB Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astounded and stood up in haste; he said to his high officials, “Was it not three men we cast bound into the midst of the fire?” They replied to the king, “Certainly, O king.” (25) He said, “Look! I see four men loosed and walking about in the midst of the fire without harm, and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods!” (26) Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the furnace of blazing fire; he responded and said, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego, come out, you servants of the Most High God, and come here!\” Then Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego came out of the midst of the fire. (27) The satraps, the prefects, the governors and the king’s high officials gathered around and saw in regard to these men that the fire had no effect on the bodies of these men nor was the hair of their head singed, nor were their trousers damaged, nor had the smell of fire even come upon them.
Exo 14:29 NASB But the sons of Israel walked on dry land through the midst of the sea, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
Exo 19:5-6 NASB ‘Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; (6) and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”
Deu 7:6-8 NASB “For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. (7) “The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, (8) but because the LORD loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the LORD brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
